Picking a puppy is hard on my heart because it could suggest that I love or value one more than the others. I realize the puppies are not offended when they are not my Chosen One, but I feel sad on their behalf.
I have, therefore, always picked my puppy based on more objective criterion so that who stays here is really all about the random roll of the genetic dice and not conscious favoritism for one puppy.
For example, although maybe someday I will keep a boy, the presence of a Y chromosome currently eliminates some puppies right off the bat.
I want one I can show in the Beauty Pageant — although a beautiful puppy, Clover’s white sock would have made that hard. And so on…
Not meeting my objective criterion doesn’t make a puppy bad or inferior — it simply means his or her life’s purpose is in a different direction, as determined by the roll of the genetic dice.
Another busy day here at Puppy Central and so more later…
