I play cards via Zoom with my two sisters, dad, and sometimes random (and beloved) family members three times each week — we started this when Covid landed on us all and have continued for nearly two years.

Last year, it went like this:

Perfect Sister: Six boxes of Thin Mints arrived today!

Family: That’s very nice.

Perfect Sister: There was a note about my new house and that the cookies are vegan but it did not say who it is from — did any of you send the cookies?

Family (including me): That is so nice but no — not me.

A week later…

Perfect Sister: I still do not know who sent those cookies but since the person had my new address, I have decided it must have been the Property Manager, Raul … but I do not remember telling him I was vegan but maybe I did. Isn’t that so nice of him?

Me: Okay — if you are going to give credit to Raul, I will tell you that I sent the cookies.

Family: Laughs — and we play cards.

A month or so later…

Perfect Sister: I am still eating those Thin Mints that Raul sent.

Me: Raul?! I told you that I sent them.

Perfect Sister: You were serious? I thought you were kidding.

Me: What?! I told you that I sent them.

Perfect Sister: I thought you were just trying to take credit for sending them.

Perfect Sister proceeded to poll the family — not one of them thought I had sent the cookies, in spite of having said I did. They all thought I was kidding.

Me: Do you all think I am incapable of being nice? Of doing a nice thing?!

Family:

We are all still laughing about this and that is why — when I ordered the cookies from Ada this year to send to Perfect Sister — I went ahead and gave Raul the credit…
